Plotagon: a budget-friendly way to make movies

Breaking into screenwriting and filmmaking on a budget is tough. You’ve got ideas, maybe even scripts, but without funding, it feels impossible to get traction. Production’s expensive, gatekeepers are everywhere, and if you’re a lone agent, forget it!

Plotagon: what it is and how it works

Plotagon is a basic animation tool that’s surprisingly effective. Here’s what it offers:

3D animation

Plotagon’s 3D look gives your stories a visual edge without complicated tools. Just set up your scenes and drop in your characters.

Script to speech

Input your script, and the characters read it using the in-program text-to-speech function. This way, you get to hear how your dialogue plays out, which is helpful for refining your lines.

Add your own audio

If you really want to make your movies stand out, you can add your own voices, custom music, and sound effects. It’s a nice option for personalizing your scenes.

Character creation

Got an idea of how your characters look? Well, thanks to the character creator, you can customise to your heart’s content. Choose features, clothing, and accessories to get the right look.

Scenes and locations

With nearly 200 locations on offer – eateries, outdoor spaces, genre-specific environments – you can tell virtually any type of story, in almost any genre.

Affordability and accessibility

Plotagon is made for people on a budget. They offer a free version (limited options, watermark on videos) and a subscription that unlocks all possible outfits, accessories, and locations. It’s available on Android and iOS mobile devices, plus there’s a desktop version. This means you can make movies on the go, wherever you are.

The limitations

Now, the quirks.

Plotagon’s character options are limited – no body diversity, limited movement, and the camera angles can feel repetitive. It’s also not great for longer scenes since there’s no duplicate option, thus inputting new scenes and dialogue becomes clunky after a while.

Characters don’t move or physically interact much. You can’t, for instance, walk, run, or fight. You’re pretty much limited to talking and light character interactions (hugging, kissing, a tame slap).

This could, in fact, be a benefit if you’re testing out your dialogue, as Plotagon is certainly made for dialogue-driven projects.

All in all

Plotagon’s not perfect, but I use it regularly, and I’m kinda in love with it! Pair it with a good editing software (I use CapCut – it’s awesome!), and you can make some really compelling, engaging movies.

I appreciate the affordability, too. Most animation programs aren’t budget-friendly (or if they are cheap, there’s a steep learning curve).

I’ve always been more of a dialogue-heavy screenwriter, so for what it is, Plotagon’s a solid choice. If you’re the same, you’ll probably have a lot of fun with it. If nothing else, you could use it as a sort of “proof of concept” for your live action movie ideas.
